Make your neighborhood spotless by organizing a spring cleaning party
Date Created: 05/11/2012
After a long, cold winter many people look for every opportunity to go outside, replenish their vitamin D from the sun, enjoy the fresh air and smell the flourishing plants that provide a healthy and fresh dose of oxygen. However, it is important not to impose on nature, and sometimes the best way to do that is to clean up after those who are less conscious of Mother Earth. Organize an outdoor spring cleaning party, where you and your friends help clean the community.
Send out party invitations via email, Facebook or Twitter, announcing your intent to turn your neighborhood into a trash-free zone. Tell everyone to dress in old clothes that they don't mind getting dirty and tell them to bring a pair of gloves and some trash bags.
Start early in the morning. Have everyone congregate at your house, or at a designated central area that everyone can easily access. Have a map with locations marked on it that need work done and assign groups of people to each portion of land. These areas can include parks, streets, sidewalks, schoolyards, courtyards or any other public domain, where large concentrations of people might neglect to throw away their trash. You can also engage in other activities that might help spruce up your town, like painting old fences or park benches that need it. Remember to ask permission from your local government before you alter their property!
Make sure you have fun while you are doing work. Have trivia prepared or plan songs everyone can easily learn and sing along to. This will show that working for a positive change can be fun, especially if everyone gets involved.
End the day with a party at your place. It will be a great reward for everyone who labored all day long. Make a personalized banner out of recycled paper that says, "Spring Cleaning Party 2012!". Create an upbeat environment with bright colored streamers and mylar balloons.
For party tableware, use plates that can either be reused or recycled and serve healthy food. Make heirloom tomato sandwiches or rollups using avocados, salt, pepper, canola oil and hummus. Everyone will have worked hard, so they might want an adult beverage like beer or wine to wind down, but keep a stock of juices and soda on hand.
For party favors, give spring cleaning-themed gifts, like brooms, dustpans, microfiber cleaning cloths and Swiffer. Your guests will appreciate the practical gesture.
