Infuse culture and fun into your party with a Japanese theme

Next time you throw a get together with your family and friends, bring some variety and cultural awareness to the evening with a Japanese theme party. Our Eastern neighbors have a rich history rife with tradition that will undoubtedly bring a fun and educational flavor to any affair.
Send out party invitations that have traditional Japanese art on the inside, such as one of Katsushika Hokusai's renowned paintings that portray Mount Fuji and large crashing waves. If any of your friends are familiar with Japanese culture due to their education or travels and have traditional Japanese garb or cultural artifacts, ask them to bring them for decorating purposes.
If you are unfamiliar with how to make Japanese food, start your preparations early so you can fix or remake anything that has gone wrong. Don't be afraid to ask any of your friends with good culinary skills for help.
For the main meal, you should include the staple Japanese foods tofu and rice - add soy sauce and sesame oil with fried veggies for a delectable stir fry. Perhaps look up fun sushi recipes. If any of your guests abstain from meat, there are a variety of sushi rolls that can be made from vegetables that will be both delicious and nutritious. Dessert can be mochi, which is a rice cake very popular in Japan.
Serve non-alcoholic beverages like juice and soda, but also include sake and Japanese beers like Sapporo and Kirin. Chopsticks should be included in the party tableware, but set out forks and knives for those who might have difficulty.
For decorations, hang streamers and balloons, but also make party centerpieces using paint and markers that bear Japanese characters with positive messages like health and good fortune.
Play party games like karuta - it involves cards, quick thinking as well as haikus. For party crafts have people paint their names with bright and vibrant colors using the Japanese alphabet or have guests construct frogs, cranes and other fun animals with origami.
If you want to be more contemporary, karaoke is a very popular pastime in Japan. If any of your guests have a karaoke machine, ask them to bring it, or you can rent one at an affordable price. You and your fellow party-goers can spend the night singing along to your favorite songs, and if you are feeling ambitious, find some popular Japanese artists and do your own renditions.
