Enjoy the June weather with a bike ride bash
Date Created: 05/31/2012
Hit the road with your friends with a group bike ride. This will be a great way to catch up and socialize while motivating everyone to exercise and soak up some vitamin D. Start out by sending party invitations to your friends and family - this will be a leisurely ride so let them know bike riders from all ages and athletic abilities should be welcome.
Be prepared
Have everyone congregate at your home or wherever you will begin your ride. Make sure all the riders check their tire pressure and tighten up any loose parts. If you have any spare helmets give them to guests who might not have one. Also try to get a few extra bike tubes and a small pump that you can keep in your backpack in case anyone gets a flat.
Encourage everyone to carry a water bottle on them - the hot June sun can easily cause dehydration. You should also have a first aid kit on you that comes with bandages and disinfectant ointment.
Before the ride, teach everyone the proper turning signals to avoid confusion with passing vehicles or a potential accident with other bikers.
Route
Plot out a route that is either along paved bicycle trails, through slow moving domestic areas or has bike lanes. Make sure everyone has a vehicle in which they can transport their bike. If anyone has a bike rack or a truck, have them coordinate with guests who don't.
Make a map of the route and photocopy it for guests. Depending on the size of your party and whether people bring their children along, some people might get separated, so this will ensure that everyone gets to the ending point without getting lost. Also make sure you have a group leader who will check for oncoming traffic at intersections.
After party
Host a get-together after the ride, where everyone can socialize and get to know one another. Hang up streamers, balloons and curling ribbon to give the event a festive feel. Play great backyard party games like volleyball or horseshoes and facilitate party crafts for the kids by leaving out markers, crayons and paper.
Provide nourishment and hydration as well with snacks, Gatorade and plenty of water - everyone is bound to be famished after the adventure. If anyone has any specific bike knowledge that they could share with the guests, such as how to change a flat tire or how to mend a hole in a tube, organize a live demonstration for everyone.
